I took the illusion spell off of Beth about a week later. You should have seen the look on her chubby little face when she ran downstairs that morning, blubbery, blubbering.

B: Mom! How in the world did this happen again?
K: What's wrong, honey?
B: I'm...I'm...f-f-fff.... *hic*
K: Fat? Yes, you are, honey. That's weird.

I didn't, by the way, bother to reveal my real figure to my daughter--as far as she was concerned, I was still a size six. A shallow little porker trying to lose weight needs role models.

B: I don't understand...how did I gain all the weight back so quickly?
K: Oh, honey...I'd say...you gained it back...with interest...
B: Thanks a lot, Mom! Just when I thought that new boy, Justin, was getting his courage together to ask me to prom...he....Oh God, I'm such an idiot. Why did I eat so much this week? I really need to go to the doctor.
K: Honey, it's nothing out of the ordinary. Look at me. You can look this skinny again. We just gain and lose weight really rapidly in this family. It comes off. Just look at me for proof.
B: Except, for twenty years, you were...
K: Those years go by quicker than you think, hon. Here, sit down. Have some of the biscuits I just baked.
B: (mouth full of biscuits...she's been trained by now to eat without thinking) Ifft's just that...it seems like the more I gain weight, the skinnier you get...it's not fair to be f-f-fatter than your own..."
K: Shhh...honey. Did I mention you look great in that outfit?
B: Oh, whatever, Mom. How do I face the kids at school today? How do I face Justin?
K: Hon, Justin will love you for WHO you are.
B: Yeah...
K: And you know you have a beautiful face. And I WISH I had your hair. Just keep at it in the gym, and I KNOW you're gonna meet someone soon!
B: That sounds weirdly familiar, Mom...
K: Does it? Here--I packed you an extra lunch. Things will all come right, you'll see.
